Telogen Effluvium Treatment
Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair shedding that occurs when a large number of hairs enter the resting (telogen) phase of the hair cycle prematurely. It is one of the most common causes of diffuse hair thinning.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, triggers for telogen effluvium include:
- Major physical or emotional stress (surgery, childbirth, severe illness)
- Hormonal changes (postpartum, menopause)
- Nutritional deficiencies (iron, protein)
- Certain medications
- COVID-19 infection (“COVID hair loss” has been increasingly reported)
Symptoms
- Diffuse hair thinning across the scalp
- Increased hair fall when brushing or washing
- No significant inflammation or scarring of the scalp
Natural Course
Telogen effluvium typically occurs 2-3 months after a triggering event and can last up to 6 months. Chronic telogen effluvium can persist longer.
