Lipomas
Lipomas are benign, slow-growing tumors composed of fat cells.
Lipomas typically present as:
- Soft, doughy, and movable lumps under the skin
- Generally painless, although larger lipomas or those pressing on nerves can cause discomfort
Lipomas can develop anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, and thighs. They are usually small, but some can grow to several inches in diameter.
The cause of lipomas is not entirely understood but is believed to involve genetic factors. In some cases, multiple lipomas can develop, a condition called familial multiple lipomatosis.
Although lipomas are benign, they may be removed for the following reasons:
- Rapid growth
- Pain or discomfort
- Cosmetic concerns
- Uncertainty about the diagnosis
Treatment options include:
- Surgical excision (most effective and preferred method)
- Liposuction (in select cases for larger lipomas)
If you notice a new lump or mass, it’s important to have it evaluated to rule out other conditions.
